Jacob Bekenstein, a research student at Princeton, suggested that the area of the event horizon actually was the entropy of the black hole. However, there seemed to be a fatal flaw in this idea. If black holes had an entropy, they would also have a temperature, and be giving off radiation like a hot body. But at that time, everyone believed black holes were completely black.
